What to Pack for Adi Kailash Yatra — The Complete Checklist

Packing right can make or break your Adi Kailash experience. You'll be traveling from the plains (300m) to high mountain terrain (3,500m+), so you need to be prepared for a wide range of conditions.

Here's our field-tested packing checklist, refined over 10+ years of organizing yatras.

👕 Clothing

Must Have:

  • Thermal inner wear (top + bottom) — 2 sets
  • Fleece jacket or warm pullover — 1-2
  • Windproof/waterproof outer jacket — 1 (essential)
  • Comfortable trek pants — 2-3 pairs
  • Warm socks — 3-4 pairs (wool recommended)
  • Comfortable walking shoes — broken in, with good grip
  • Warm cap/beanie — 1
  • Gloves — 1 pair (for September-October trips)
  • Rain poncho or light raincoat — 1

Good to Have:

  • Flip-flops/sandals for rest stops
  • Quick-dry t-shirts — 2-3
  • Scarf or neck gaiter (multi-purpose)

📄 Documents (Critical)

  • Aadhaar Card (original + 2 photocopies)
  • Passport (if you have one — useful for ILP)
  • 4 passport-size photographs (white background)
  • Medical fitness certificate (recommended for 60+ age)
  • ✅ Booking confirmation printout
  • ✅ Emergency contact list

Note: We handle the Inner Line Permit (ILP) process — just provide us the documents 15 days before travel.

💊 Medicines & Health

  • Personal prescribed medications (enough for trip + 2 extra days)
  • Basic first-aid: band-aids, antiseptic, pain relief (Crocin/Combiflam)
  • Motion sickness tablets (Avomine) — mountain roads are winding!
  • Diamox (for altitude sickness prevention) — consult your doctor
  • ORS packets — 4-5
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Wet wipes / tissues

🔌 Electronics

  • Mobile phone + charger + power bank (10,000 mAh minimum)
  • Camera (if you're into photography — Om Parvat views are incredible)
  • Torch/headlamp — essential for early mornings and power cuts
  • Earphones (for the long drives)

Network Tip: BSNL has the best coverage beyond Dharchula. Download offline maps before leaving Dharchula.

🎒 Other Essentials

  • Sunscreen SPF 50+ (UV is intense at altitude)
  • Sunglasses with UV protection
  • Water bottle (1 liter, reusable)
  • Small daypack/backpack (for the Adi Kailash viewpoint walk)
  • Dry snacks — nuts, energy bars, biscuits
  • Plastic bags (to keep things dry and for trash — Leave No Trace!)

❌ What NOT to Pack

  • Heavy suitcases (soft bags/backpacks only)
  • Too many clothes (you can layer effectively)
  • Expensive jewelry
  • Alcohol (it's a spiritual pilgrimage and alcohol affects you more at altitude)
  • Excessive electronic gadgets
