How to Reach Adi Kailash — The Complete Route Guide

Adi Kailash (Chhota Kailash), situated at 6,191 meters in the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand, is one of India's most sacred and awe-inspiring pilgrimages. Unlike Mount Kailash in Tibet, Adi Kailash is entirely accessible by road within India — making it a far more practical pilgrimage.

This guide covers every route, transport option, and travel tip you need for 2026.

Route 1: Delhi to Adi Kailash (Most Popular)

Total Distance: ~600 km | Duration: 14-16 hours by road

Route: Delhi → Moradabad → Haldwani → Almora → Pithoragarh → Dharchula → Tawaghat → Gunji (Adi Kailash Base)

Route 2: Haldwani/Kathgodam to Adi Kailash

Total Distance: ~400 km | Duration: 10-12 hours

Route: Kathgodam/Haldwani → Almora → Pithoragarh → Dharchula → Gunji

This is ideal if you're arriving by train. Kathgodam Railway Station is the nearest major railhead, well-connected to Delhi, Lucknow, and Kolkata.

Key Trains to Kathgodam:

  • Ranikhet Express (Delhi → Kathgodam) — Overnight, arrives 5 AM
  • Uttarakhand Sampark Kranti — Morning arrival
  • Shatabdi Express (Fastest, ~6 hours from Delhi)

Route 3: Dharchula to Adi Kailash (Shortest)

Total Distance: ~90 km | Duration: 5-6 hours

If you're already in Pithoragarh district or prefer flying into Pantnagar Airport, Dharchula is the last major town before the Adi Kailash route.

Route: Dharchula → Tawaghat → Pangla → Sosa → Gunji

This stretch passes through some of the most breathtaking Himalayan scenery — the Kali River valley, dense deodar forests, and views of snow-capped peaks.

Route 4: Pithoragarh to Adi Kailash

Total Distance: ~180 km | Duration: 8-9 hours

Route: Pithoragarh → Dharchula → Tawaghat → Gunji

Pithoragarh has a small helipad (Naini Saini Airport) with occasional helicopter services. From Pithoragarh, the road to Dharchula offers stunning views of Panchachuli peaks.

Important Travel Tips

Best Time to Travel

  • May to June — Roads are clear, weather is pleasant (10-20°C)
  • September to October — Post-monsoon, clear skies, best Om Parvat views
  • Avoid July-August — Monsoon causes landslides and road closures

Documents Required

  • Valid government ID (Aadhaar Card / Passport)
  • 4 passport-size photographs
  • Inner Line Permit (ILP) — we arrange this for you

Road Conditions to Know

  • NH-9 up to Haldwani is a well-maintained national highway
  • Almora to Pithoragarh has some narrow stretches but is generally good
  • Dharchula to Gunji is the most adventurous — narrow mountain roads, river crossings, and stunning cliff-side paths
  • BRO (Border Roads Organisation) maintains the road, but landslides can cause delays during monsoon

Altitude Acclimatization

  • Dharchula (915m) → Gunji (3,200m) — significant altitude gain
  • Take it slow, stay hydrated, and acclimatize at Dharchula for a night
  • Our itineraries include proper acclimatization stops
